I found this after searching through countless 56-D's for an rpm, and finding nothing. It looks almost identical to the top or bottom of the O in One, and I've seen many examples of dropped letters and thought this could possibly be an impartial dropped letter? From what I've read about dropped letters, it doesn't always have to be the whole letter or area that is filled, struck, dropped off and then struck again right? I'm hoping it is, I've been searching for a dropped letter for a long time. Thanks in advance!

I truly think it's a dropped letter error. It matches the shape of the O in "ONE".

Looks like it could fit for a dropped letter. Here is a quick overlay:

I am curious to hear other opinions on this one.

Aside from the damage to the rev. rim at 9k, I'm not seeing any other damage that would indicate a "vise job". IMO, yes to the dropped letter error. Nice find, good eye...

I have never seen a large letter be a dropped letter.

@Greasy Fingers: Thanks for responding, I have high hopes for this coin.
@John1: I haven't either, but I think it's certainly possible. On most wheat cents I see the top part of the O struck through slight grease, so it makes sense that it would be that part to be dropped.

Here is just a quick view of what I think could be the cause of the partial dropped letter. The grease commonly seen on wheat cents that I look through usually fill the top of the O. I found a picture online to show what I mean:

The coin doesn't show exactly what I'm picturing, as it would be filling the top of the O not more to the side, but it's close enough. This is the grease that would harden and then get struck as a dropped letter once it fell out, and that would explain the impartial letter and not a full one. What do you guys think?

This may well be a dropped letter impression. It's hard to see how the reverse of another cent could leave such an impression, as surrounding high-relief areas are unaffected. At the same time, I find it a bit concerning the way in which the letter fades out. A hardened piece of "grease" in the shape of a partial letter should have clearly defined ends. However, I don't see this as a disqualifying observation. On balance, I'd go with the dropped letter diagnosis.

Thanks for the response @mikediamond! The fade is certainly weird, and I haven't seen it on any other dropped letters. I appreciate the help, thanks again.
