I bought this back in 1982 for $45.00. I thought it was a steal. They only made 41,000 of these and I thought it would go way up in value. All these years later and it only Grey Sheets for about $75.00 and only if I generously grade it as an XF. I wonder why? Image: 1888.jpg62.03 KB

theres not much of a demand for Three Cent Nickels, other than from some particular people on this forum. the supply of only 41k is enough for the number of collectors interested

Good looking coin but I agree with littleboy. Just not a huge demand. Just like my 1885 Half Dollar. Little over 5,000 biz strikes. Not a huge dollar coin.

Collecting tastes can change, and with it--value of low-mintage coins. You never know...keep it because you like it!

I don't mind. I'm finding that you can find a nice example of the 3 cent piece for an affordable price. I rather like the design myself!

Yep, It's supply and demand in a nutshell. I like them and "toy" with the series myself. Some series' can lie dormant for years as your example shows. Tougher Two Cent Pieces "exploded" a few years ago. Glad I got mine when I did. I've always liked the design and own several myself. If you like them keep getting them while they're cheap. Perhaps some day......

The reason it hasn't gone up in value is because you haven't sold it yet. Once you sell it, it will probably double in the next price guide. Happens to me all the time.

Heck, if they are still so affordable you can buy up some more of the 41K issued and try to corner the market!!
Go for it!

zoom: Nice coin. i have always liked these little pieces of history. however, I must agree. They just don't hold the collector base of other series. Some day they will just explode in value, as the Two Cent Pieces just recently increased, although mostly for the 1864 small motto and the 1872. But, we have to hope that when that day comes, that the value increases, that we'll still be around. Good luck.

Halfabust - That is UNDOUBTEDLY what would happen. So - should I sell it and immediately improve the markets for all the other 3 cent nickel owners in the world or should I be selfish and hang onto it for another 26 years?

Hang on to it and keep the market down. I still need to buy an 84 and an 87.

I thought I heard something about these 3 cent coins being one of the most undervalued types of coins at the moment? If I were you I'd keep onto it and maybe it will start to appreciate in value soon.

I love 3 cent pieces I have a 65 and67 and enjoy them , I think it's just a thing that a lot of collector's can't relate to coins not found in their pocket. We all are familiar with 1,5,10,25,50,cent's and the odd $1.00 3 cent is odd to most people.
