Well here is the coin but I am not saying which way or the other if I think it is real or not before a few questions. First size and weight. Second, since you know a hole was drilled 5 years ago, you apparently have a long history with the coin so you know exactly how you got the coin so the past ownership?

FYI
The coin is 100% real. It is 30mm in diameter. I don't know the weight.
The coin is inheritance from my grandfather.
The hole was drilled to be worn on a necklace long time ago.
How stupid! Right?

Well if you want to sell an ancient coin, as you asked what it is worth, a coin like this is very subjective to wear. And yours is holed which is very hard to factor in but of course detracts. But you probably want a reasonable estimate so if you were willing to consign this to an auction house, this search below will give you an idea.

https://www.coinarchives.com/a/resu...&results=100

But if you were in a rush and wanted to go through ebay, the only way to get certain value for it, as people will be more careful if there is no history, is to spend the $35 and have it sealed and graded by NGC and pretty much no one else. Then if you are in a rush you can be more certain of what you will get. Here is a non holed coin example, graded by NGC as Choice Extra Fine and it went for $353. You don't get top dollar from ebay as that is for sellers who need to sell right now and you can't wait very well for a buyer unless you set a price and are willing to entertain offers and negotiate for a few months until there is a price you accept.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Macedon-Un...047675.l2557

Ungraded, with the hole, and on ebay in an open market, my feeling is $95-$150. If you break through the psychological $100 barrier then you move up again and you will have another psychological barrier at $150. So your coin sold by a dealer who people trust on ebay, who has a history, is about $135. But if you got two bidders who just needed it a bidding war can happen, still don't bank on it, these are out there and people will wait as they wait for a nice Athens Owl. Collecting ancients is an older persons game and they are patient collectors.

And that is all I know except I suspect if you do sell it on ebay the buyer will send it off to NGC to be sure and PayPal always sides with the buyer so if NGC said it was not real PayPal will refund your buyer from your credit card they have on file. Selling it to a middle man to sell it for you with no history, you will be offered $75 as the middle man has to make money. And the middle man on vcoisn for example can wait for a very long time and get $175 eventually.

Thus keep this in your family is the best option. Hope some of that helped.

Thank you sooo much for your detail response!
You helped me a lot!
I believe strongly I will keep the coin in the family!
On the other hand I want to seal the hole and see what NGC grading will be. Not sure yet!
Thanks a lot again!

Do not attempt a repair yourself. That actually hurts the value like a harsh cleaning etc. Glad I could help! By the way, I put a silver coin like the one below a stater from that series in a bezel, had a jeweler do it,and gave it to my wife as a necklace years ago. Better way to make a necklace in my opinion.

Thanks again for your help!
