I picked this up on ebay recently. Legitimate seller with sterling feedback, fair price, and it weighs 26.91g on my scale. I've matched (I think, anyway!) the obverse die with one Ce 8R that recently sold at an HA auction. However, after reading all of the other posts about pieces of dubious origin, I can't help but get a second opinion from all you experts out there about the authenticity of this piece. I feel good about this, but I'm a novice in this field. What do you guys think?

I love the history behind this coin. I'd love to visit Real de Catorce someday! The YouTube videos I've watched about that place have helped me survive the quarantine!

Thanks a lot!

No, I missed it! Saving up for a future time! I did some window shopping, those are some amazing coins. So many of them...in another tax bracket

So... Heritage auctioned a whopping (7) examples of the 1863Ce 8 Reales in Monday afternoon's "Internet-only" session after offering (2) nicer specimens on Friday. Part of what was apparently a small hoard of Real de Catorce pieces... the 2R and 4R have been listed in the last few of HA's weekly auction (with some more coming up this Thurs).

and the next (6) lots following. All were given details designation for cleaning... but most had pretty decent meat to them (I was outbid on the toned piece noted as "polished" rather than "cleaned"... liked the strike).

Yours has moderate wear, though it does look pretty decent surface-wise.

Oh, now I see what you're talking about. I've been tracking those, and used them to compare my coin when I was thinking about buying it (it was a helpful tool in die varieties!). Strike does seem to vary quite a bit, as one of the "XF details" coins had a very poor strike; I initially wondered how it wasn't graded VG-F!

I had been outbid on a 4R coin from one of the earlier Internet auctions, which prompted me to go on ebay and find the coin that I ended up buying.

These Cap & Rays coins are fascinating, so many mint marks and varieties, so much history behind it. I really look forward to delving more and more into this series - I just got my feet wet, but it's an enticing swimming pool! Not to the mention the Pillars/Portraits that I'll inevitably start collecting too

to the Forum and to the world of Cap and Ray 8Rs.

I agree the coin is genuine.

However, I do not collect many genuine 8Rs. I specialize in counterfeits made to circulate along side the genuine item.
