I just don't know what the story might be. If authentic, it purports to be an 1866 Hong Kong one dollar with stamped name J. J. HUNT and date DEC. 1" 1870. Unfortunately, Google does not surface any results to enlighten me on this individual.  |

What I do know with these,
is that they are one of the most popular targets for counterfeiting, and I have seen some very deceiving examples, way too good for me to pick from screen pictures.
I don't have the necessary skills or experience to be reliable enough to help out in this case.
The counter marking, I believe, does lend some credance to the pictured coin being genuine.
Perhaps someone else in the CCF may be able to post some side by side comparative pictures.

I went down the internet rabbit hole a ways until I realized that only a small number of old newspapers have been digitized and have been made free to view -- so my search results were highly skewed towards a handful of sources. Here's a new set of photos with more lighting.  |

"J.J. HUNT" isn't exactly the most uncommon name... with a link to Hong Kong involved, British would of course, be the best guess but American wouldn't be impossible, either.
Keep in mind, too, this is more of a love token than a prepared merchant stamp, which may imply one-time gift to a relative or friend... so said "J.J. Hunt" may not even be the HUNT relation or family friend with the Hong Kong link.

@jenn, do you think this HK Dollar is medal alignment or coin alignment. I have two pieces 1867 and 1868, both are real to me, are both in coin alignment. Some internet information says it is medal alignment.

Remember, if you ever have any question about coin vs. medal alignment... just look at how they sit in slabs!

Yes, I left this forum for a while and miss most of the sophisticated coin collectors like you. I enjoyed discuss Mexican 8R with you. I have retired and enjoy a "slow-pace" lifestyle here.
