Hello! I am new to this forum but have used it for references many times! I am looking for recommendations on a half dollar Barber proof coin I acquired a couple months ago. I assumed it was cleaned, but sent it to NGC just in case it wasn't and would come back as CAM. The coin has deep mirrors as a CAM would and if not cleaned, I believe it would have received a higher grade. I'm looking for opinions as to whether you would crack the NGC case and send it to a grading company that issues detail grades or leave it as is in the NGC case. It is a beautiful coin, but I'm looking to sell it. With only 670 minted, I'm thinking this is in the higher tier of the coinage (I could definitely be wrong). Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you! Blake

Wow , who in their right mind would clean this beautiful proof coin . I would not give it to another TPG to regrade it , they will give you the same details call .

Thank you - I appreciate the responses. I was asking about TPGs because my understanding is ANACS and ICG offer coin grades in addition to the details label. I know NGC is a higher tier grader, but was just wondering if it would be beneficial to have a grade attached as well. I think the highest details grade you can receive is PF60 or MS60, so I guess I could just assume with the NGC holder that it would grade at a 60 or less.. How much do you think this affects the value? It also makes me sick that someone would clean this coin! Total disgrace! :( I honestly think it would have graded CAM without the cleaning with how the mirrors are in spots that would be much harder to get to on the coin.

Personally, I'd leave it as-is. Details is Details, and as often as we say "buy the coin not the holder" around here, a numerical grade will not help this otherwise gorgeous coin, especially if you take it to a lower tier company to get it.

I agree that you should leave it as is. This will always be a details coin so it doesn't make sense to spend more money on grading fees.

Thank you for all your opinions. I'll leave the coin in the NGC slab. It is a beautiful stunning coin anyway, so I think the coin will speak for its quality not to mention the very limited quantity.
Does anyone have recommendations on the coins value? It looks like to me the coin has strong details with a strong strike. Apologies if it is against the rules to ask for value estimates!

Anacs or igc would just put pr60 details cleaned on it. Anyone looking to buy the coin would know that's equivalent to NGC proof details cleaned. You'll find more demand for the coin in this NGC holder.
