I recently encountered this 8 reales cob, looks like Philip V early type. But I found there is some additional stuff on the shield side. I use red line to circle it. Do you have any idea about this?

Sorry to say the coin appears to be a fake. Ywan, can you please post a picture without the red lines for me.

Well, I would be very surprised to find it was real. The dies used to strike the cobs were flat - like those found in a "normal" press. Unless my eyes are fooling me this cob seems to have "faceted" surfaces each of which contains die detail. The silver cobs were punded out and WERE irregular - but the detail impressed on them does not change orientation to follow cob surfaces.

I am also bothered a bit by the details on the coin. They appear even too crude for cobs.

I think the die face was cut with an irregular surface and most likely the coin is cast. Have you checked the edge and has it been weighed?

Please upload the picture with no red lines if you can. If you are interested in acquiring a nice cob, there is a great auction going on (ends 11/6) at the website for Daniel Sedwick. COntact me and I can give you the link if interested. (I have no affiliation with him other than as a satisfied customer) He and his father are the authors of the "The Practical Book of Cobs". His website contains a nice reference section on fake cobs.

yeah, I agree that the detail just looks too crude. It is definitely a fake.
