I have several rolls of brilliant uncirculated 5 cent coins I've had for 40 years. I have seen this variety in Canadian Coins and their varieties, by Pierre Charest, 9th ed 2012. He does not describe any other attributes clarifying the two types, but I had conversations years ago with a Canadian who described what I see on these coins. Basically on coins with a closed 5 the leaf is close to the denticles, and the 9 also comes closer to the denticles. On the open 5 variety both the leaf and the 9 are farther from the denticles. Check it out.
You will find here some information about this coin. (Sorry it's in french !) But I can resume by Die Deterioration. So we can find many variant between the open and closed 5. You will see few pictures in the following links.
yontan would you really like to see the differences. between these 2 coins. if you do take me pictures of both sides. keep the obverse and reverse from the same coin together. take your images top dead center. post them here and I will show you. that way you can see for yourself.
