373035678378. (Search ebay by auction #)

Interesting ebay auctions by a Dealer I think in Indianapolis selling many TPG commemorative coins graded AG - and lots of bids. I don't really get the interest in owning lowest graded coins some selling at premium prices. Agree that a well worn coin is often beautiful and probably a lot of great history in that coin but do people collect TPG low grade coins. Just thought this was interesting.

At one time, we had several collectors in this forum who very actively collected and posted about their circulated commemorative coins - search for posts by nickelsearcher, HONDO and NotMintToBe to see their contributions. (There may have been others that I am forgetting at the moment.)

The spirited competition for the lowest-graded examples of certain issues was a topic that was discussed on multiple occasions.

As noted by commems I have written extensively on the pursuit of honestly circulated classic silver commemoratives. Although I have been silent for awhile on the topic its not a lack of interest but rather the lack of market availability of any additions (downgrades) to my set.

Over time, I've expressed in various ways the drivers for a collector to pursue such a set. I suppose the most succinct explanation is that these coins were not intended to circulate and as such finding acceptable examples is true numismatic challenge requiring long term planning horizons and perseverance. 'Deep pockets' will not complete the collection; rather a deep reservoir of patience is required.

To the ebay example of a G4 California - there was no true spirited bidding completion for this coin as it is not 'low' enough in grade to attract the attention of myself or the other top flight collectors of the series. My set has a PCGS G4 example and the top set has a PCGS FR02 example.

That said - if this coin were certified PO01 the winning bid would have been substantially higher and likely pass into 4 figure range.

I'm with you on the logic behind the prices one pays for these. Me, I collected middle grade coins with nice appeal. If there is a date/mint mark I'm missing I would consider a premium, but not at the level above average some of these are selling for. Registry sets for them only baffle me further. So no, I don't get it. I simply commend them on collecting to keep the hobby alive. To each their own.

I'm just setting on the sidelines waiting and waiting for another lowball that I need like Nickelsearcher said. I do miss the Classic Commemorative only section.
