I'm ignorant about this one as well. I'd guess it might actually be a farthing (1/4 penny) if it's only a bit larger than a nickel. The British penny coins are about the size of a US half dollar, so I expect a half penny should be a lot bigger than a nickel....
Our British coin fans will straighten this out.
Your coin has a lot of little hits and scrapes, but they appear to be from circulation rather than from cleaning or other abuse. Given the stricter standards used for world coin grading, I guess this one would grade VF to aEF (about EF) maximum.
