Just got back from Baltimore. We left at 8:45 AM, the convention center is about 180 Miles south of us, but its all highway/toll roads so its about a 2 hour 30 minute drive. We stopped at the 2nd from last toll plaza in NJ, went to get some coffee and a rest room break. I'm not a fan of Starbucks, but I needed a coffee so I got a Starbucks and its so burnt, I ended up throwing it out. Probably the only bad part of the trip. We got Baltimore at 11:30. The Convention Center is right next to Camden Yards baseball stadium and the inner harbor and the restaurants, shops, aquarium. It's a great area for a getaway. There are several parking garages nearby, we knew the Sheraton had one and it was connected to the convention center, so we parked at the Sheraton. Parking was not cheap but considering the location, I can't complain, its still cheaper than NYC parking. It was $35 for all day. Comparable to most touristy areas of the cities and cheap compared to NYC which is around $50 per day now.
Since it was early we walked around the area and at 12 checked in, got out name tags and walked in. There had to be over 500 dealers. The place is set up in rows numbered from 100 to 1000, all the dealers have a number. I would like to say that there was some sort of organization, but the dealers all sold the same thing in various areas. I had a set of places I wanted to go, first place was Absolute Bank Notes from NYC, she had 2 fractional notes from Portugal on hold for me. I also ended up getting 2 coins from Portugal. From there we went to a local coin shop that was there, but they were mobbed and he didn't have anything I really wanted.
Elizabeth and I then walked from the 1000's up and down each aisle. I picked up another BU coin from Portugal and then went to get my maple leafs. I was only going to get 2, but he had them @$30 each which is $2 cheaper than I can get, so I picked up 3 in total and a 1/10 ounce gold coin. At this point my budget was done, but Elizabeth had me check out a few more notes, sadly most of the Portuguese was common stuff and what wasn't common was in lower condition than I wanted. The dreaded middle bend was present on a lot of notes and in many the paper was broken hard. So I passed on most notes that I saw.
Last person on my list was the Tooky Bandit from Paper Money Forum. He had beautiful and well priced US notes. And he had the one note I've been looking for. Mind you my budget was already blown, he proceeded to give me a great price and Elizabeth said get it. So I got the last fractional in AU 55 EPQ that I needed.
So what did I get?
5 Centavos BU 1917 Portugal Note
10 Centavos AU 1917 Portugal Note
100 Reis Silver Coin (XF/AU) 1910
1 Escudo BU 1959
4 Escudos 1919 BU
3 2022 Maples Leafs ($5 CAD) bullion coin
1 2022 1/10 American Gold Eagle ($5 USD) bullion coin
1863 Abe Lincoln 50 Cent Fractional in AU 55 EPQ (PMG)
But the best part was that we were hungry and we walked to Phillips (a famous seafood place) and had lunch (
https://phillipsseafood.com/locations/baltimore/). Oysters, Poke Tuna on a crisp, Crab Cake Sandwich, Lobster bisque soup and a 5 layer coconut cream cake. All with Baltimore Blond Guinness, which is brewed nearby, I need to go back.
Here is the appetizer picture. I wouldn't have spent so much but Elizabeth told me to. So it was better than I expected.
