So, If I check out the price guide here for example, or anywhere, but I will use the site below as an example.

1 Dollar 1979 prices and values

https://www.coinsandcanada.com/coin...ar-1965-1989

If you go under "Uncirculated" price starts at $2.20 for MS-60 to $126 for MS-65

but the Uncirculated set is sold for $4.95 which contains the same 1 Dollar 1979 coin I believe.

https://www.coinsunlimited.ca/royal...oof-Like-Set

As far as my limited knowledge of grading goes (still learning), the UNC set coin would classify close to MS 64 or 65?

Thank you for reading this and maybe I missed something as I am still learning.

The proof like dollar is different then the uncirculated "business"strike. I don't know the exact specifics, but the proof like dollar is minted at a slower speed with a greater impact on special blacks and dies. Maybe I just described the specimen process or proof process. But my point is that its a different process then the regular old minting of coins for circulation. This will lead to many other question, like whats the difference between proof, proof like, specimen, and business strikes. But essentially this is the difference between the prices you see. A high grade uncirculated business strike is harder to find then an uncirculated proof like strike.

Make sense?

someone else with more knowledge may further elaborate.

I think that most of the UNC's would be 62-63, not 65+. Bear in mind that your reference is in Canadian $$ ... a US dollar is worth $1.40 Cdn. The sets were probably P/L's which would be higher grade and more crisply struck as tfred stated.

as stated above, the proof/specimen sets were intended to all be high grade & made with specially prepared dies. where as everyday business strikes were mass produced with mass produced dies. the sets were also handled packaged with a lot more care in order to preserve the "minty-ness" of the mint state strike.

PS. throw the catalog prices out the window... do an ebay "sold" search if you want to see real world values

Great question - in my opinion the PL is not nearly as collectible.

I finally understand, thanks everyone!

How would I be able to tell a proof like apart from regular coin?
