I don't think it will grade AU. You might also consider using 100% pure acetone on it,the dark spots worry me a bit. Wait for more members to comment on using acetone or not. John1

Most definitely the triple die obverse. I worry the light hairlines might be from a previous cleaning. I'm at a grade of XF details. Still overall a nice coin and great variety!

John1 Yea John1, don't know about the acetone type cleaning? Never attempted cleaning coins and would feel more comfortable just leaving it alone. Quote: apcol258 Posted - Today :1H 53M ago

Still overall a nice coin and great variety! apcol258...Thanks for confirming the TDO. My understanding is like 12 that has been found. I thought about having it graded and slabbed. Do you think it is worth doing? I just want it conserved and not really thinking about how much it's worth or that sort of thing.

While not common, there's probably more of them out there than the population numbers suggest. The 3cn series in general isn't widely collected. If it were me, I'd put it in a flip, label it and enjoy it.

I was thinking along the same thing that Condor101 posted. It has that flat shelf like doubling.

I honestly can't tell from these photos. I was just minutes ago posting about Longacre Doubling vs. Machine Doubling in another post here on CCF found some good photos on an even older post by COOP see my post here http://goccf.com/t/373510 I'd like to see photos closer up of the legend area, after the coin had a soak in acetone myself. Coin does appear to be at least EF40.

Regarding Acetone Dipping? Couple folks have said something about acetone dip? Honestly, I know nothing about this technique. What will this do to the coin?..I know this coin has some black spots and they do distract from the overall presentation of the coin. Also, would a TPG put "cleaned" on a coin if in fact they knew the coin was dipped in acetone? I've always thought (pleading my ignorance here?) cleaning a coin is Bad Mojo?

it looks like Longacre Doubling. Here's an example of Longacre Doubling on an uncirculated 1865 III¢ nickel. The larger image really shows the doubling well. Click the photo for a larger image

The tripling is most apparent in the "C", but there are other markers as well. This coin matches up and is TDO FS-101.

I have looked up 1871 TDO in Giffords Ultimate Three Cent Reference guide book (Out of Print) and there are 3 TDO varieties, this one appears to be the third one, also having the most value added to it. THe reverse has the markers I needed to verify that. Nice find, EF45 to AU50 though straight grade may not happen due to the light scratches which I see on the obverse, never-less a quite rare and desirable variety to find. Nice going! Giffords book is available on Newman Numismatic Portal, though the photos are not the best contrast, it is usable.
