The Two-Cent was struck from 1864 through 1873. Trying to determine an exact date through that much damage I'd guess it to be an 1868. As JBuck mentioned, patterns were struck in 1863 with varying "In God We Trust" mottos. The other was "God Our Trust". In either case I find it extremely hard to believe it is one of those.

1) Date is definitively 1864, not 1863

2) I don't think that's just ground-find corrosion... look at how blobbish the legend lettering is. I think we're seeing a cast contemporary counterfeit. A die-struck CC would much more desirable collecting-wise, but still an interesting find.

I had the same opinion that the coin was cast, but I thought it was made of soft metal. The melting point of the nickel is too high for counterfeiting - 2,651 degrees F.

A nasty POC that's garnered more input than it deserves.

Can you get a close up shot of the "D" in UNITED on the reverse, I need to see the part closest to the rim. I think it's an 1865 from what I am seeing but it may never be a definitive call with so much damage amd corossion.
