"Alami" is an Islamic surname, particularly popular in Morocco. "10 mils" would be the denomination - "mil" or, in French, "millieme", was a denomination worth 1/1000th of the primary currency unit, in Egypt, British-mandated Palestine and Jordan, Libya and Tunisia.

SO, "private token from somewhere in Northern Africa or Palestine" seems a plausible tentative ID. Perhaps Palestine would be the most likely candidate, as the currency unit there was actually spelled "mils".

I was re-searching for some unidentified tokens are there is now a referenc to a 5 mils Alami token on the PCGS site. It appears these are listed in this book:

Judaic Tokens and Medals by Sylvia Haffner

Does anyone have a copy? I'm very curious about the history of this token.

So I found a copy of the Haffner book, from the book:

Massua El-Alami was born in Jerulalem in 1894...later became attorney general to the mandate government... This token is believed to have circulated on his estate and/or his agricultural school in Jericho.

It is amazing that in the internet age it took me 4 years and a 50 year old book to identify this token. No indication of rarity or value but I would assume it is scarce. I'm tempted to send it to NGC, whatever the grade it would be the top pop :)

Thx for circling back to CCF with the answer to your question @dar. I'm going to move your thread over to the tokens sub-forum, but please add in some pics of it slabbed if you decide to go that route.

It's my understanding that the TPGs only slab tokens from well-catalogued series. Given how hard it was to find info on this piece, I suspect this would qualify as "not well-catalogued". So I suspect this would be bodybagged as "not covered by service".

Just looked at the list of world tokens that NGC will certify.

"Israel, as listed in Haffner"

Looks like I'm good

I was half joking about sending it to NGC but I justed looked at Heritage and tokens listed in Haffner can sell for several hundred dollars or more. I will definately send it in now.

Results back from NGC. I assumed the grade of GENUINE meant there was something wrong with it but I contacted them and the response was

"for tokens with in-filled incuse design elements only, we simply call them genuine. It is not possible to determine if there has been a post-production addition of ink and further, the token design does not conform well to grading on the 70-point scale"

I have really no idea what this is worth but it's fun having the only certified example (PCGS has certified a 5 mil example)
