Been looking through a bunch of completed Heritage Auctions and found some coins I am interested that allow to send an offer to the current owner.
Has anyone had success with this feature? Curious to see if anyone has, as some auctions you can make an offer for auctions that have ended more than 5 years ago.

As far as I know, if the "Make an Offer to Owner" tag is still showing it is viable, but after 5 years I'd be surprised. I think you need to offer at least 20% above the original sale price

Is it just me, or are almost all the make an offers priced so high that "why bother?" is the only thought and you carry on with life?

It's not just you. If you really have to have *that* coin and have the money to get it, then go ahead. But there are other quality coins out there and if you're patient, you'll find it.

I've looked at them many times and the price has been always too high for me to be interested. There are better options out there.

I agree, don't bother. Prices are grossly inflated. Most of the time, no response is received.

Offer current blue book, and if it's a no-go, oh well... More will come. It's also possible they sold it at some point after it ended, and they just forgot/neglected to take it down.

Yeah, the minimum offer you can make is an extra 30% of the final price. Would be interesting if any one ever managed to get a coin like that though!

I check out Heritage at least once a month and have won a few auctions over the years but never gave much thought to the make an offer link. Keeping to the topic, I'm assembling a PCGS MS70/PF70 Australian Silver Wedge-tailed Eagle set. While NGC has them all from 2014 to date, finding any PCGS beyond 2017 is extremely difficult. Finding one on ebay that I'm missing, I made an offer ten dollars less than the buy price and got rejected. My offer would have matched that for a rather common NGC graded specimen. My point is, I would think the third party grader and coin in question would play a big part in how far off of the trend you could offer and have it accepted. If in your budget, try and let us know.

This isn't a bad time to make offers. Worst case scenario they dont respond or reject your offer.

I'm with the 'always too high to bother' faction.

I received offers for a couple coins I won in Heritage auctions. This happened more than 10 years after the original auctions. I remember one offer was triple what I had paid but I decided to keep the coin. FYI it is an 1880-CC Morgan in PCGS MS-64 DMPL. It is an unattributed VAM-10 example and I wonder if that was part of the reason the collector was interested.

Nice to hear Jaobler! I was skeptical that the original owner's bother looking at the offers they receive for auctions complete that long ago.
For what it's worth I sent two offers on two different coins that were purchased 2-3 years ago, no answers.
It is probably best for coins that were recently won; past ones seem to be a crap shoot to get a response.

ive tried making offers and receiving offers on a few but to no avail. Great idea but hopefully it gets more traction in the future.

I did once and got the coin. The final coin I needed to complete a set and I paid too much for it. I have done better with HA inventory as I know people at HA and they will do better than listed prices.

Agree with Andrew99. Sam S. at Heritage is great to deal with for HA Inventory. Managed to secure a nice piece cheaper than the listed price thanks to him. If you're serious about buying the coin, they'll work with you.
The offer feature is a good idea, but it would be nice to see more responses from the owners. No responses on all of the coins I have sent offers for.
