Sure more to coin photography than I thought. Lighting, lighting, lighting is my toughest problem so far. Looks like I got a ways to go to get clearer pictures. Anyway, I'm starting.

Still trying to get a digital picture of the slab without getting a ghost image of the camera reflecting off the slab. May have to move away from the target further rather than in macro mode.

But,.........I will get better.

Hi Jerryb

try diffusing the light when taking pictures of coins in a slab .

you will be surprised how much it cuts the reflection .

my set up is simple and the light sources allow for me to tape a sheet of copy paper in front ,I use helical 10W natural light fluorescents 2 and a reveal 3 way if needed for more light .

results

hand held at about five inches diffused light (just the 2 - 10 watters )PCI slab .

Im sure that the pics would have been more detailed had I taken the time to set up the camera on the copy stand or tripod .

Think the plain white paper trick did it.

WOW, I will have to use this Idea. I take awesome pics of Circulated Copper, and decent pics of everything else. Ive been meaning to try more complex methods of diffusing the light, but this way cant be any easier. I think I will try this right now. Thank You

Jerry, you need to get your image size up. That last pic is only 200 x 270 pixels.

BadThad......

I kept it small because, if I'm not mistaken, a 100K limit to pic size?

I know how to make it bigger when I save it but just kept it smaller because of the above 100K limit?

Maybe I'm wrong on the limits?

Please advise.

I think you are right on the limit size. I tend to increase the size but drop the quality slightly for the forum.

Nice pics by the way. You might want to try a polarising filter to get rid of reflections, although you will need a bit more light.

Jerry, looks good. I spent a couple hours last night experimenting with lighting, white balance, and camera location. Got some decent pictures and detail, but still have some work to go to get it where I want it.

The thread by SuperDave ("Project A720: Shooting coin pics with an inexpensive digicam") has some great stuff in it. Might have to post in that thread to bump it back to the top.
