I have 2 scanners. On both when I scan a full red Lincoln Cent I get fire red splotches outlining Lincoln and raised edges. Seems like no scanner settings from 72 dpi to 1200 dpi seems to eliminate them. Am I doing something wrong or is that just a problem scanners have in general?

Any suggestions would help.

Hey jerryb, sorry to see no replies. New to the site but I've got some camera tricks I'm posting. I gave up on my scanner...it really doesn't do much for coins. If you've got even a cheap digital, you can take good pics with a few items. Look for Post...

Jerry,
what happens when you scan a brown lincoln? If it comes out OK, I would suspect the software can't handle the dynamic range. It isn't a resolution problem. Do you have a photo program with a "twain" input that might communicate with your scanner? Like paint shop, or photoshop, or similar? Some scanner/software combinations have produce excellent results, but it is a learned skill for many. If you are going to want to post many or sell on ebay , etc. a digiatl camera seems a better way to go. Even there though, the software can make a big difference.

Try placing a colored sheet of paper behind the coin before scanning. Blue seems to work well for silver coins, so perhaps yellow, tan, or red will work for your full red lincoln.

Some pics of the effect youre getting could be helpful...

I've been scanning alot of coins, and some scanners definately do need some creative settings to work well... That said, the cheap Canon CanoScan LiDE25 I have, does an awesome job; my older (more expensive HP) needed lots of settings changes to play ball while the new, high end Lexmark I have is much like the Canon; a few tweaks and away we go!
