1943-D Lincoln Cent Unc. Spear Error?

I have this 1943-D Steel Lincoln Cent with what looks like the spear error most knowingly found on the 2005-D Jefferson nickel. This penny also has a thicker line on the reverse. And, while I'm here, is this a high grade for a 1943-D? As you may know, it's quite hard to take a good picture of steel pennies, but I can try to get some additional pics if needed. Thank you!! coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 05/20/2020 10:52 pm Looks like a coin scratch. The coin has been plated and the value is reduced to face value. But it is still a Wheat cent. (True coin collectors do not want a coin will altered surfaces. They consider the coin as undesirable. How do I know it is plated? Note the top coin. This one is a high grade coin. MS-67. The one below it was reprocessed/plated. Yours appears as chromed. (A three step process involving copper/nickel and chrome added to the coin) Report this Post to the Staff
merclover Bedrock of the Community United States 10635 Posts	Posted 05/20/2020 10:55 pm Looks plated with a PMD scratch. The extra shininess gives it away... true unplated steel cents have a duller shine to them. Yours are unquestionably plated. Report this Post to the Staff

But when they are plated, all the imperfections of the coin look like something, but this one is not a doubled die or any variety. Just an altered surface coin. Report this Post to the Staff
