I recently switched to square coin safes for long term storage. However, there is some empty space even when you have a full roll. My question is if I do not want the coins moving around inside what would be safe to place inside the tube to take up the extra space with out harming or toning the coins over the long term?

I cut the zipper part off of a sandwich size zip-lock bag and wad up the bag part and put it into the tube. It can compress well enough. You can use 2 bags or a piece of a single bag. It is as soft as the safe, and it is made from non-pvc type of plastic ( at least the Brand name). Check them ever so often no matter what you use.

You know what I do, I take a sheet of printer paper and cut 1/4 of the sheet off, then, I fold it over and over till you can't fold anymore, and just cut off the excess and fold that piece in half. It fits right in there and acts as a "spring" to hold the coins down.

I use cotton balls (cut to size).

hmm, I'm not sure how safe parts of a ziploc bag, cotton balls, and printer paper actually are.

cotton balls have no dies or chemicals...just a wad of cotton. I can't see a problem with plastic from a bag either. paper might have chemicals added though. Toilet paper might be good too!.

Many cotton products are bleached with chlorine, also many cotton balls have recycled ( non - virgin ) fibers. Not saying all are, usually the cheaper, non-surgical type. If the printer paper is archival acid-free paper it might be OK. The Brand name Zip-Lock bags are made of virgin polyethylene.

I don't trust plastics like zip lock bags. I have never had a problem with print paper. Cotton sounds good.

I think the cotton ball idea will work the best. They are 100% pure cotton. I will put the ugliest coin on the end just in case :)

cotton IS bleached to remove the natural color, but then its washed in a huge vat to remove the bleach. Its nothing but natural cotton. Could you imagine putting bleach on your wound!. YYYeeaaaoooo!.
