I do know this is real, I have had it checked by a US coin & old money broker! This has been in the family since well 1875.. It belonged to my Grandmother's (born 1924) grandfather.. It was passed to my father, who passed it to me.. I do know it's in Tarnished condition! Which hurts the value.. Since it has been passed to me I've kept it pressed!! I will keep this for my family, but I would absolutely love any information anyone could offer.. Thanks in advance *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

Great story. I think the value is purely sentimental at this point.

Here's a pic of mine: It is from the last (5th) series of fractional notes that was issued in 1974/1875. William Crawford is the dude in the picture, and he was Secretary of War then Secretary of Treasury in the early 1800s.

Thank you.. I Know it's not valuable because of its condition.. even if it was, I wouldn't get rid of it.. it's been in my family a long time - 145yrs! I have pulled my 3 children out of Public schools & am homeschooling them myself!! My oldest son is 14 & we just finished The Civil War.. I pulled the fractional note out told him what I could, but then realized I needed to educate myself further on this.. they did not teach my generation about "old Money"

I can't believe they removed a fact about history.. just the same as they did to this new generation's American history books!! History can not be rewritten.. it is what it is & was what it was

I can understand the thrill of the find. I recently received a box of my "mom's sewing junk" from my dad, but it turned out to be a mislabeled treasure trove of unknown Paternal family heirlooms. Along with other great stuff, in a secret pocket of an old leather pouch, I found a City of Omaha obsolete currency note, and a counterfeit Confederate $100. They held onto these when they moved from Nebraska to California in 1886. My great-great-grandfather was a little too young to fight in the Civil War, but 5 older brothers did, 4 for the Union and 1 for the Confederate, with two passing away in the war. After the War he farmed in Nebraska for a couple decades, then onto California.

I know enough to know that counterfeits are rampant. It's not always very expensive, but be wary you know who printed your piece. A lot of the counterfeits are contemporary to the 19th century, and are an interesting part of the history of the Confederate economy... Just not actual Confederate printed. Don't get burned financially hoping its something its not.
