Okay, so a few things about this:

1. Things have really not "calmed down" as much as people seem to think they have. There's an assumption that they have because we're opening up, but opening up doesn't mean the problem has disappeared.

2. According to my girlfriend (a Doctor Who works on a covid ward), fomites (that is disease infested objects and surfaces) are not a significant source of covid transmission. It's almost exclusively through the air. Still wash your hands after touching potentially contaminated materials, but not likely to be what gives you covid (much more likely you'll get it going into the bank to pick them up, which is why I've only been getting coins from the drive through window).

3. The virus is only stable outside the human body for a couple days on most surfaces. That means in nearly all cases, the coins inside the roll are safe, as they were likely wrapped weeks, months, or even years ago. What I have been doing is getting all the rolls home and emptying them into a large tub, since the wrappers are the only part that has recently been in human contact. I then wash my hands thoroughly, leave the wrappers to age a few days, and start hunting the coins as I normally would right away out of my bin.
