Hello again!
This is only my second post on CCF. I read here all the time and I am still CRH and spotting things in the cash drawer at the job, but I just haven't had a lot of time to post! I have several many coins I want to ask about and I will get to them in time, but today's oddity has me stumped.

I saw this in the drawer at work the other day and had not had time to look at it until today. I kind of started collecting the ATB Quarters because of the artwork, and when I saw this VERY shiny coin I was hoping it was an errant proof or something uncirculated. I bought the coin from the drawer, stuck it in an empty pocket and forgot about it.

So here it is.
As mentioned, it is EXTREMELY SHINY. And although it has some dings and nicks (and what appears to be a small chip on George's nose) it looks more like chrome than clad.

When I was looking at the reeding, I noticed a black spot. I got the loupe and noticed it was a hole! Additionally, there is a hole almost exactly opposite this one on the other edge. Upon magnification, I can see that the hole is conical in shape and does not go all the way through, on either side. Additionally, there is no visible copper layer on the edge of the coin, at all!

I thought it might be a fake, or perhaps it was someone's experiment, but that doesn't explain the fact that the entire edge shows no signs of copper. Nor can I see any inside the hole. I need help! The only other thing I can think of is a wrong planchet (I should be so lucky!) but I have no idea.

Because it is so reflective it was had to shoot. If these pictures are no good I can try and do more. TYIA -

Any sense of the coin's weight?

Not exactly as I don't yet have a scale, but I meant to say it is the same diameter as a standard quarter and it SEEMS to be the same weight. Without weighing it, I can't be sure, but there is no obvious difference in weights in my hand.

appears plated and the hole was put in for it to be used as a necklace.

Necklace crossed my mind - but not the plating. Just odd.
I appreciate the replies. Interested to learn more about it....

I'm going to go with plated as well given that the reeds are silver-colored (no copper visible). It's not an uncommon practice. Another option is it was spray-painted silver, which would deposit a thicker layer than plating. It's hard to tell from the pictures but the detail on the devices looks a little mushy. Plating keeps the detail of the coin almost exactly.

Also - where the hole has been drilled doesn't really make sense for a necklace/pendant. Whether you display George or the Canyon side, the coin would be rotated 90° from vertical if hung from a necklace chain.

And

Looking forward to seeing more of your finds.

Someone's homemade attempt at a squirting quarter maybe? The hole seems too big though to actually squirt.

I am sure by the pictures it's been plated, and I am sure someone took the time to drill out the edge for some reason. Neither are something that would come from the mint like that.

You could take a pin or needle and slide it in the hole until it stops going in and see how deep the hole goes if you wanted to know.

I'm not really sure the reason for it. Key chain? Part of an art project like a chandlier? fob for a ceiling fan switch chain? A secret stash for something tiny and illegal? Just felt like drilling a plated quarter on the edge to see if they could do it? People do strange things to coins.
Maybe it was a start trying to make a bracelet or anklet? Hard to say why really. Whoever did it knows why. Lol

LOL! I didn't know what a squirting quarter is, so I looked it up. Definitely not that and definitely not spray painted. I am an artist in my other life and I can tell it is plated not painted. As for the depth of the holes - they are only as deep as the tapered part of a standard sewing needle. Not deep at all. And I agree - the axis for a necklace would be wrong. So - who knows! But thanks for the thoughts! I look forward to posting other finds. I don't concentrate on one type of coin - but look at all types of stuff. It's a lot of fun!

Thanks again to all. Enjoy your day.
