Good morning all ok I'm still rather new to coin collecting and I came across this odd looking 1917 wheat back could someone out they tell if this is normal wear or error Thank you

It looks like solder or glue. If it's just glue, you may be able to chip some away with a wooden toothpick.

Let us know if you think it may be glue.

@kim, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with @yokozuna that this looks like dried adhesive in front of Abe's portrait. A carefully-administered bath in acetone might also help. Unfortunately, this area might have been protected from oxidizing and when removed, the coin would then be unevenly toned. Otherwise, it is a pretty nice early Wheat cent.

Nothing "normal" about this cent, nor is it an error. It did not leave the mint looking like this. PMD.
