Greetings all, I've spotted this large Byzantine bronze for sale. The seller doesn't provide any information but it looks like a follis from Justinian I, year 12/539AD?, Nikomedeia mint. What puzzles me is the size - a claimed 42mm. I've never seen a Byzantine bronze that big. The portrait also looks kind of crude, though I've read that was sometimes the case on Byzantine coins. Any opinions welcome :-)

Sorry but I agree this is not a genuine example.

My first suspicion is that it looked too good to be true.
The details appear to be a bit 'mushy' which suggests that it may be a 2nd generation copy off a genuine coin; style OK, but the fabric isn't, besides, the flan is too obviously over sized.

Justinian I, Year 12, Nicomedia mint... when you see that combination, just run away. There are millions of these fakes out there, mass-produced for sale to the tourists that pour off the cruise ships to visit Ephesus and other tourist traps in Turkey.

As the comment on the third example in the pic BobL linked to states, the "giveaway" for these pieces is the little notch, looks kind of like an ` accent mark, just outside the rim above the second "P" in the obverse legend.

Great, thank you everyone for the information! I shall run a mile from this auction; glad I asked first, and I have learned a little more.
Now I have a moral dilemma: Do I try to warn others who may be considering bidding? This particular auction site allows potential buyers to post public questions (though the seller can ignore them of course).

I have to admit that I missed the little 'notch',
despite not having a happy 'feel' about the OP's coin.
My strong suspicion is that this piece is a pressure die cast copy off a genuine original.

Back in 2015 I fell for the same one
Sold by a 'reputable' German auction
Curiously it appears to have been made of a ceramic type material which had the look and feel of genuine bronze
But had the brittleness of a fine teacup !
