Nic-a-date will not work on silver coins, I don't know of anything that will work.
I do think it will work on the mint-mark but only on a nickel.

You can purchase Nic-a-Date from most B&M dealers or online retailers. Instructions are on the bottle but you basically add a couple drops, wait, and then rinse. It is an etching chemical so it technically damages the coin by selectively etching the surface but then again, you are dealing with dateless nickels with little value. Nic-a-Date only works on nickel composition coins and you can use it on any part of the coin you want- some people treat the whole coin to give it an even appearance.

Hi scott3270, I made the mistake of trying it on a SLQ early on. It puts a black spot that cannot be removed. Only nickel.

if the date is restored and it is one of the scarcer buffaloes does it bring some of the value back for the coin I myself would not buy a nic a date coin but I'm sure some people would

All depends on you taking a chance on ruining a already worn out coin. At a local flea market there is a guy with a pile of nickels that have all had the dates restored. Really nice discolored area where the date is. He has a little problem selling them.

I am keeping one of my 14-D's but will put the other one up here for sale here at CCF than ebay. I'll let you know if and what it sold for. I only paid .16 cents a piece for these Buffs. I am sure I'll get some kind of return.

Quote: if the date is restored and it is one of the scarcer buffaloes does it bring some of the value back for the coin If it is one of the keys or semikeys, it sure does. I would not expect more than 10-30% of G4 price, depending on how nice it looked(if done improperly, an ugly brown stain is left ).

I personally don't like the way it looks, but if someone is looking to fill a hole in their album, then they might buy it.

They made silver date for SL quarters, dunno if they still do.
