Stopped at the bank today to deposit a couple checks and decided to cash out one for 60 bucks. Got a roll of halves and two roll of dollars, all hand rolled. The halves had one 68 D, the one dollar roll had nothing I needed. The second dollar roll had an 80D SBA that I needed and these beauties.
I was just looking at the edges for the mint marks looking for D's never even noticed they were proofs till I saw the s on the first one I had to look twice before I believed it. Somebody's gonna be upset.
It is as simple as someone breaking open a Proof Set and spending them. It is certainly not unprecedented- some poor kid in Macomb, IL got a big scare in 2007 when he apparently broke up a Presidential dollar Proof Set someone had given to him and promptly spent the coins on a value meal at McDonalds. Some moron at the depositing bank called the police and Secret Service because they had no idea what a proof coin was(or maybe they didn't even know what a Presidential dollar was...) and assumed they were counterfeit. It was all traced back to this kid at McDonalds. Long story short, the idiot banker caused alot of grief for nothing because he had no idea what the US Mint actually produces
