Although not designated this sure looks prooflike to me. Unusual for Dahlenega.

I agree. PL! Might be worth a crossover sub at PCGS for the PL designation.

Some research and I found the coin from a 2007 auction. NGC ms-61. What a totally different look. Identified by the reverse die variety, and close inspection reveals the unmistakable reverse squigly mark above the eagles beak, and the obverse hit below the eye. Obverse marks on the jaw and in the field to the left of the nose are also a dead giveaway. No doubt it is the same coin. The photos that make it look PL were obviously juiced and made these marks tough to see. I was real close to buying until I uncovered the old auction photos. The dealer is what I would call unscrupulous, and that's being nice. Won't even consider buying from him in the future. Great way to establish a reputation, huh? This is also on ebay, should it be pulled, or are pics a buyer beware problem?

Wow, yet another reason to reserve judgement until the coin is in-hand. I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about it on the ebay side, since it's a genuine coin, but definitely worth putting that dealer on your blacklist.

I was going to advise using caution with thinking this coin as PL. I'm not aware of any Dahlonega and Charlotte gold with original proof-like surfaces. Not to say a piece here and there doesn't exist, but I would think the seller would tout that quality if the coin really looked like that in hand. I was going to go with the images being enhanced beyond reality, based on the first photos.

I think there are examples of $1 gold Dahlonega PL gold. It still amazes me that the dealer would try to sell this coin with juiced photos. He's not going to get any new customers using this tactic.
