My first thought was some type of environmental damage. Looks like it was etched by a chemical or something. Maybe a very bad cleaning.

A number of years ago (when ebay did nothing to stop it) I deliberately bought a lot of the Big Tree company's Chinese fakes off of ebay. The finish on yours, at least in these pictures, looks just like the typical porous nature of the cast fakes I got. The mushy details of yours also matches that of a cast fake.

I bought one of the fake Shield nickels, but its packed someplace so I cannot get pictures.

Too bad as this a difficult variety to acquire! I got my rev 68 no broken letters in VF20 with problems to complete my rev of 68 set.
