Why are some older coins gold or yellow in color instead of silver or gray?

If you have a weight, weigh it, it could by lightly gold plated, or it's just odd toning or a chemical.

Could be plated, could be toned--toning brought about by exposure to environmental agents reacting with the surfaces of the coin. Toning is not uncommon with coins as the decades go by, especially with coins exposed to their environment vs those protected.
