Hi guys,

I found 2 pennies from my grandfather's collection that I noticed are beautifully toned. There were stored in a leather purse for years and are NT. I have read that real leather is good for toning copper coins. Is this correct? Why is it that some copper coins tone better than others?

I understand that there are collectors out there who search for beautifully toned coins and pay a premium for toned coins and noticed that prices vary greatly. Why is this? Is it worth it to get these coins graded by a TPG?

You pose an interesting question about the leather. My father stored coins in all sorts of materials, including leather. Some toned, some didn't. With leather, one the causative factors might include what it was tanned with. Vegetable, aluminum, chrome, or some other compound. Probably more important would be where the purse, visa-vi the coins, were stored. Dry, damp, UV light, etc. as well as other possible environmental elements. As far as value with toned coins, condition comes first, then personal preference for toned coins. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. Beautiful coins IMHO.

Toning means different things to different people. Some people love the various hues and range of tones while others hate it and see it only as damage. That is why you'll have various reactions to various coins. No two coins tone the same. Some people try to artificially tone coins (we busted one guy selling on ebay about six months ago). Grading services won't see the same beauty in your coins that you do. Silver tones differently than copper... bottom line is toning is a highly subjective subject. Save your Grandfather's coins and cherish them because they were his.

Those are beautiful coins. I love toned coins. I think Blind Squirrel is on to something. They would, and still do sometimes, soak the skin in urethra or urine.
