Hi guys,

I am new to the coin community. I noticed this 1982 Lincoln Penny (Large Date) has an error on the rim of the obverse. Is this called a misaligned die strike? Is this a common error on Lincoln cents?

Also wanted to ask what can cause a stain on a copper coin, like the stain on the reverse of this penny? I rarely see this on my old pennies. Will the stain detract from a collector's interest in an error coin?

Very minor MAD and Rim Fin. The stain could be anything.

Agree with John1. And to answer your other question, it's extremely common to find such minor examples. Generally, MADs only add value if it's extreme enough that some of the fields/design elements are missing.

Agree, MAD. No premium, sorry. Stains usually are other chemicals (acids) reacting with the copper. Collectors try to steer clear of stains, so yeas, stains do affect values.

More of a tilted die issue. Note the shift on LIBERTY how the left upper corners are affected in the same direction of the right rim and fin area. I feel this is caused by the Machine Doubling on the movement of the dies after the strike on the way up. But just not seeing much evidence of MD on the devices except on that one area on the "LIBERTY". Not your typical MAD coin. But there is weakness on all the left side bust areas. The jacket looks like an over polishing issue. On the Reverse something is also affecting the tops of the EPU and the general strike seems weak. The EPU area might be trails on the area. Is the weight normal?
