a friend picked this from circulation, she got it in change a week ago. it had me puzzled for part of a day. I have never seen one of these before. looks like a real quarter, but is milled-out on the reverse.

i took it home and fondled it a while, stumped, then dug into my jar of saved change from spending to find another 1998-P quarter for comparison.

playing with the two coins, I discovered the actual quarter fits snuggly into the milled-out reverse of the other.

that's when I had my moment, lol...

looking around online I found a few pix of the same type of coin, but didn't find any interesting reading, so next best thing is to bring it here and show it. no doubt someone else knows what this is & can explain it. I'm unsure if there's a milled-out reverse that belongs with it, which would completely encase the actual quarter. I also cannot imagine what trick one could do with it.

is there anyone who can elaborate?

Interesting find.

Strange the milled out half appears to have been stretched out as well.

jbuck-

that's what I discovered when the actual quarter slipped into the milled-out quarter. I didn't see the size difference initially.

Tunnioc-

i thought about that & tried it, but the coins come apart upon flipping. the actual quarter doesn't stick inside the milled-out quarter, but it fits into it perfectly. the quarter falls out of the other without much effort, so flipping it into the air causes them to come apart mid-flip. doesn't mean that trick can't be done, it just means I don't know how it's done, or if it's even the right trick for the coin. it's still a clever thing. will figure out eventually. would be helpful to know a magician!

bobby131313-

thanks for posting that video link!

only just now did I think to weigh the coin. i'll bust out my scale & weigh it soon & post a pic. the milled-out quarter feels too light, it doesn't feel like a heavier metal. I realize a lot of the coin is missing & it would naturally feel a bit lighter because of the milling, but that presumes it was indeed a real quarter to start with. it looks like it was, but was it really? it doesn't feel like it's made of a heavier metal, it feels light as aluminum. and would the milling-out of an actual quarter cause the thing to expand slightly? if it expanded, wouldn't the obverse surface show some kind of 'stretching-out' across the fields & devices? would that even be possible?

i'll have to dig it out again. I had it out last night, but I put it back. it's buried. takes me some doing to dig stuff out.

2 heads are better than one!

Put a small dab of plumbers putty in first, it should hold it together and is easily removed...

Measure the diameters of both coins and compare them to the standard of 24.26mm/955inch.

it weighs 2.1g and appears to be a full centimeter larger than a regular quarter, 2.5 (or 2.5+) cm in diameter.

it's still a cool thing to pluck from circulation. I remember back when I was 12 or 13 and 'seriously' (for a 12-year-old, lol) getting into coins for the first time, I read some article about someone finding a hollow nickel that came apart & contained a microfilm. was it real? I don't know, just something I read when I was 12. this coin made me remember that.

makes me wish I would have stuck with coins instead of straying into everything else that kept me from coins.. sportscards, records, etc.

Mr Pink, I hope you find out how this was intended to be used~ I agree with the heads or tails trick. Maybe someone out there is looking for your half of the coin~ wouldn't that be something if that someone finds you on here?!!
Either way, it reminds you of your childhood so it's a cool one to keep!
