Hello,

Coinfacts.com lists that there are two different reverses on 1961 Quarter Eagles (along with a couple other dates). I have not been able to find pictures showing what changed on the reverse.

Does anyone have any pictures showing the what is different between the varieties?

Thanks,

steve

This is a Type I reverse. Notice the eagles right talons (your left) are closed, the arrowheads are large and the bottom one is very close almost touching the CA.

This is Type II. The talon is now more open, the arrowheads are smaller and the bottom one is well away from the CA.

The lettering is also slightly smaller and thinner, note how the 1 and 2 are well separated from the / as compared to the Type I. The leaves are further fro the lettering as is the eagles wing from the first A in AMERICA.

Conder, thank you for the pictures and the great explanation.

Interesting that the mint mark (first example) falls on the relief portion of the coin rather being entirely in the field.
