I've got an 1853 50C Round BG-415 R-5 unfortunately holed NCS VF Det.
I also have a "goofy head" 25C and a 50C Octagonal. Will try to get some pics up soon.

I have one piece and it was authenticated as one made by a jeweler in San Fransisco during the year its dated , also unfortunately holed .

but its still a piece of history and one that if not holed would be fairly valuable as it is not real valuable for anything but to connect with that time in history .

1870 1/4 Dollar fractional gold

These coins like my 1/4 dollar are so small I really think if they were used in commerce (which we know they were ) were threaded on a safety pin or wire so they would not get lost .

this coin is 3/8 by 3/8 its tiny !

never thought of that concept. You may be right. I know, my goofy head is tiny. Most of the early issues (1850's issues), were actually solid California gold where as the later issues like my goofy head, were plated! I did not know that until a dealer at Long Beach told me.

I got a pair of them - 1871 and 1876.
Happened across them, and couldn't resist.
They actually used these at one time in Calf.
Then they were given out as souvenir pieces.

At first I really did not like the fractional coins, until I saw them at a coin show. The other thing I saw before that were photographs, but sometime photographs do not do the coin justice or sometimes it the other way around..lol I have not purchased anything yet but I plan to in the future :)

I like the fractionals, just wish I had more "old" rather than "new"
