@spott, I'm going to move this over to the ancients subforum so that we can get the right eyes on it. In the meanwhile those chalky green deposits concern me. I hope that isn't bronze disease. Maybe keep this coin quarantined from your others for now.

louisvillekyshop, Wow! Every time one of you identifies an ancient for me, I am seriously impressed. Without your help I would never know what I have.

Are you saying that I have that specific coin (although in a much more "used" condition), or that I have that emperor and bull on the coin?

Spence, I normally wrap my coins in a plastic and cardboard 2x2, and then place it in a pocket page in a binder. I would hope that ought to be enough to protect the other coins from getting "cooties". Is there something I should do to help stop further damage? I would hate to think this coin survived all these years until it came to me.

Thank you all for your help. It is so much fun to pull up information and maps about where and when the coin was born.

Spott;

Yes you have Julian the Apostate. And I always imagined what the world would have been like if he really did bring back that old time religion! Sadly, in my opinion, the Romans used Gods for language, they spoke and gave everything a spirit they totally did not believe in most of the time. Listen to Marcus Aurelius's meditation on youtube the full audio book and you swear you are listening to a monotheist even Catholic. Like I love the coins with the God Senate on one side and Roma on the other which was just to tell you Roman law was here and the Senate makes the laws in the Province now. Unless your people were less advanced and they needed to know who the God of the people who took them over were. Then Senate got to be a God I imagine. So Julian was doomed to failure as there was no depth of belief in the old Gods and a new religion with true believers wins every time in history. (Take note Europe your immigrants have a strong belief in their religion and your churches are not nearly as populated with believers.)

echizento,

I thank you for the suggestion, and I will try to identify what I can by using things like size and weight and metal, as well as characters like the bull. I fear I may always need some help though since I can put two ancients side by side and not be sure from the faces that they are the same person.

I think I have found the section of the website you referred to, and have saved the link for future reference. Hopefully the lettering charts will help me recognize a starting point for future searches.

This is so cool! It says
Quote:
he campaigned successfully against the Alamanni and Franks. Most notable was his crushing victory over the Alamanni at the Battle of Argentoratum (Strasbourg) in 357, leading his 13,000 men against a Germanic army three times larger.

Some of the Alamanni came from Baden. One branch of my family comes from the neighboring Kingdom of Württemberg, now known as Baden-Württemberg. For all I know, my ancestors could have been part of the battle!

@spott, if you use the search box in the upper left hand part of your screen with the keywords BRONZE DISEASE, you will see many very good CCF threads on this subject. Here is one of my faves:

Thanks Spence!

I will take the suggestions in that thread to help this coin, and I will look for others that need protection in my collection.

Most of what I collect is low-grade stuff as my personal preference is the coins that were actually part of the history that they represent instead of pristine ones that were protected in museums.

Thank you!
