Hi Again!

I'm just reading through posts and then running to my penny bin to throw them under the microscope...

One of my 1983 pennies appears to be of the near bead variety!

Image shows two 1983s lined up at the "T". Using Paint I took a screen shot of the grid displayed. The Penny on the right counts about 5 grid units from mid bead to rim edge. The other shows 6.

Do you think I found something?

the lines you are using as references, one is on the right side of the T, the other is on the left side of the T, no way to be accurate that way, it looks as if the are the same bead style to me..

Hi silverwolf,

Thanks for having a look! I am still seeing a difference between my "suspect" coin and the others in my bin.

I pulled out another random 1983 and lined them up one on top of the other.

Meandice, yes you have a near and far bead.

If you notice near beads have a thicker rim and the rim on the far beads is thinner.

The 1983 1 cent variety issue is a bit complicated.
There are different dies and there are visual effects created by various factors (mostly the rim width and slope-ness and the state of die which affects beads size).
The coins on the above picture are of the same Far Beads die variety but one looks "Near" because of the wider rim.
One easy way to differentiate the Near and Far dies is to measure the diameter of the obverse beads ring - 16.4 and 16.0 mm correspondingly.
The 0.4 mm difference is measurable with a basic ruler.
Please note that PL and Specimen coins have 16.0 mm ring which makes them Far Beads, but visually they appear Near Beads because of the wide ring.
The variety name is confusing. I think visual effects and the rim width to not count as a variety.
Otherwise we would need to count two 1983 1 cent *reverse* varieties as well - same Far and Near beads.
But in all coins I checked the reverse difference is always attributed to the rim width.
