Masterpieces to appear on coins
The Royal Australian Mint and the National Art Gallery have combined to preserve the works of four Australian artists on silver coins.
Masterpieces by Sidney Nolan, Jeffrey Smart, Brett Whiteley and Russell Drysdale were selected to feature on the coins.
The Royal Australian Mint spokesperson Vivienne Thom says only 10,000 collector sets will be sold.
"It was always going to be a huge challenge taking a large rectangular artwork multicoloured, basically two dimensional and trying to capture that on a round small coin in a single colour," she said.
"I think we've done a great job and a lot of people who were involved in it, the families of the artists, they're thrilled too."
She also says she is confident the coins will be well received.
"There's a wide variety of people who will be interested in this from coin collectors, also people who love art," she said.
"This is now an opportunity of people to own four of these themselves, so I think there will be a good market."

I can't wait, should be fantastic.

I just hope they don't put in on a $5 coin.

Sounds like an awesome idea.
I must admit, Australian mints are the most active and collector-minded mints as far as I can see.

KLD, Yes, it's on a $5 coin.

The 4 of them are "The Masterpieces in Silver Set 2006"

These sets will be interesting as this years issue has the 1 and 2 cents and the round fifty cents.
It will be interesting on the market demand on these.
Might well be one of the best sets issued in recent years

Tony....this year's MIS sets do not have the 1 & 2 Cents nor the round 50 cents, you have mistake the MIS with the FSPS issues.

The only MIS issue that has stood the test of time is the "Royal Ladies", most of the rest have faltered and it is possible to pick them up on ebay for less than issue price.

1992 ROYAL LADIES
I think the success of the 1992 Masterpieces in Silver set Royal Ladies is in part due to it containing four $25 coins instead of the four $5 coins found in a lot of other masterpiece sets. Plus it contains a large silver Medallion.

One of these $25 coins stands out as it has the portrait of the late Princess Dianna. This will always make this set special to me. The Queens Mother and sisters (Princess Anne & Princess Margaret) are on the other $25 coins.

2006 AUSTRALIAN ART
The new 2006 Masterpieces in Silver set contains four $5 Silver Proof coins with famous Australian artwork on them. An artist has criticised the RAM's work on masterpieces as "Clumsy' and "Punch and Judy" when compared to the original Australian paintings. It seems it is very hard to portray the same depth of feeling from a large complete oil painting on to part of a small one-colour coin. The Mint only used about 50% of the coins surface to portray only a small part of each painting.

It is likely that the Mint will produce a series of these artwork Masterpieces over the next couple of year.

Greg McDonald wrote "The 2006 Masterpieces in silver (Australian Art) was supposed to be the 2005 set. Problems arose when they had to get permission from the estates of the various artists to re-produce their paintings. This dragged on for such a long time that 2005 came and went. As the series wasn't to celebrating a special year date (such as a centenary etc) it was decided to go with 2006."
