Hi Guys. I'm new at collecting coins and I'm after some idea on how much this penny would be worth. It's a 1927 Uncirculated Penny. By the looks of the pictures it's in very good condition. How much would you pay for it? Also does anyone have a second hand copy of book on collecting coins, preferably one with the values in there at the time of printing? I think this forum is great!!!! I have learnt so much in the few days I have been a member. Cheers guys Neo

When talking high value investment type coins I would suggest you go with the most up to date reference material rather than 2nd hand stuff. The high end market changes rapidly and prices can vary greatly from year to year.

Hello Neomommytas and welcome to our CC family! Everything depends upon the specific condition of the coin which is why pictures would be such a big help. Also, if it appears to be a very high grade, it would probably be worth getting it graded by ANACS, NGC, or PCGS (ANACS being my personal choice). I think all three of these will grade Australian coinage, but I'm not sure.

Hello and welcome to this great forum.
With coins like that you need to remember a few things: 1/ If you are going to sell it you won't get book value for it. (my guess would be $150 this will also depend largly on how you sell it and the interest at the time). 2/ If you want to buy do not pay close to book value for it. (same as point two for price, just shop around) 3/ If you own one and don't want to sell...don't enjoy it as UNC coins are always nice especially in pre-decimal coins.
Enjoy your stay here.

Hey guys. Well I'm a buyer. I'm looking at kick starting my collection, as I've only just started. Funny enough my 11 year old also wants to start a collection and my 3 year old loves helping mummy look for new coins. That coin just sounded like a good start if I could have got it for a good price. I'll take Bigfella's advice and stay clear though. What does it mean by 'green stuff'? Thanks for the adivce guys. Cheers Neo

The "green stuff" would be verdigris which is copper corrosion. There is no way to remove this without damaging the coin. Since it "eats" the metal, you end up with pitting where it was. If you store it with your other coins, it spreads too. It's always better to stay away from copper coins with verdigris.
