Ive been allowed to choose one of the following. 1921 Silver dollar ,1922 , 1923 , 1924 or 1925 , each is in brand new condition , ive rarely seen such beautiful coins or theres 1889 in great condition or 1897 in worn used condition. Which should I choose as far as value for my money goes ? Theres 30 different coins to choose from is there anything I should look for? Rule of thumb: when in doubt is to choose the coin with the lowest mintage and highest in demand. I know nothing on U.S. dollars, however, the principle of collecting applies internationally. Use it, and you will prosper my friend!

Thank you , most are the 20's and just the 2 19th century ones , one is well worn but nice still and clear , the other 1889 is amazingly well preserved.Ive a feeling thats my dollar. Edited to add , ive plumped for that 1889 one , id have liked to keep them all..sigh.. hope I got a good one.Its my first silver dollar , ive had the moon landing one for well over 20 years as a lucky dollar , nice addition to give the other a rest. I doubt any had been cleaned , ive had bags of mercurys in mint unc from 1936 from the same source. No mintmark on the 1889 but it is in superb condition. I actually ended up going back and taking the rest of the dollars. The previous owner had them put away in a safe , wasnt a collector , had no interest other than silver content value. How would I know if a coins been cleaned ?

wetglaswegian, Checked out the pics on the 1889. What are those black dots? Can you get better pics. Looks like the color balance is off..
Can you show pics of your next choice?

Edited to ask , how can I remove the airtite without breaking it or scratching or damaging?Pics of the morgans in airtites show too much flash glare/lighting glare.

The wet one from Glasgow if you brought them all at silver price your ve done well mate congrats also look through them to see if you have a few VAM's mixed in with your dollars but please don't clean your coins as cleaning devalues them (and if you have to use soapy water only) regards Harry

Hello there O Nugget of the Hill , I didnt clean them at all before placing them in airtites,i liked the discoloration tones. I paid over spot price on silver but not much over , we assumed each to be about an ounce silver value and took our price from that and added a couple bucks as it wasnt scrap silver. Im hooked on them now and buy a few regularly,id been collecting silver 1oz rounds and these are just as good I reckon with the added bonus of a few bucks value here and there. I dont know what a VAM is , kept meaning to read up on that but got sidetracked with the holidays and a dime collection..the Morgans I just stash away for researching another day.Theres nothing of obvious avlue I can see , no CC mint marks but I believe theres a few S mintmarks and would need to check again , might have been half dollars I seen the S on. Ill look into this VAM idea , thanks

For the record, a silver dollar is 0.77 ounces of silver I believe.

Are toned coins of less or more value?

I think that depends on the person. If it's beautfully toned and many people like the toning (like morgans dad's avatar's rainbow) then more people will demand it. If not, well, then other way.
I personally don't like toning. So... there's my 2c

I have read about toning, is there a way to tell if it is by nature or man made?

Quote: I have read about toning, is there a way to tell if it is by nature or man made? Yes and no. Some artificial toning is easily noticed - you just need a good idea of what "natural" toning looks like - but done right, there's virtually no difference between "artificial" and "natural." That's because they are the exact same process, happening at different speeds. And, in fact, it's entirely possible that some "naturally" toned coins got there just as quickly as the "artificial" ones, and were then taken away from the conditions which caused them to tone. Seem complex? You're right.
