I recently read some of Seneca's Letters from a Stoic and was inspired to buy some Roman coin that had some connection to him. Seneca (the younger) was a philosopher and generally important guy of his time. His life pretty much spanned the Julio-Claudian period, and I had a modest budget, so was started looking for AE provincials. Here is what I came up with.

Claudius-Diobol-Seneca-Made-Me-Do-It

Claudius, AE Diobol, struck AD 52/53.

O: Laurate bust right of Claudius.
R: AVTOKPA, Ptolemaic style Eagle standing right, head reverted, wings closed, across field regnal year L -IΓ
Alexandria.
25 mm, 8.4 g

No direct connection with this coin and Seneca at all, so I had make some dots before I could even connect them.

"dot" Claudius exiled him at one point and brought him back to tutor Nero when he was a kid.

"dot" I also read somewhere they he wrote the eulogy Nero gave for Claudius, and this coin was minted the year Claudius died.

"dot" As a young man Seneca spent time in Egypt with some of this family. A relative of his was the governor of the province at the time.

Anyone else have a "buy the book before the coin" story, where the book isn't about coins?

Well, I'm fairly sure that a great deal of of my ancient coins depict characters, gods, goddesses or are closely related in some way or another to events I have been fascinated to read about when I was a boy. First there were the books, later came the coins :)
And maybe, to some degree, that's the case with a lot of us.

My first ancient coin ever was a Marcus Aurelius bronze - which I regret having sold - and I chose that coin at the time because Meditations was one of my most cherished books.
