Hi,
I have this coin and would like to learn more about it. By following some of the links I've found in posts here, I believe it to depict Constantine and to have been minted in Nicomedia; am I correct?

Thanks for any information,

Here's the info:

Constantine I, AE3

OBV: CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG -- diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right
REV: GLORIA EXERCITVS -- two soldiers standing inward facing two standards between them, holding spears and shields, SMNA in ex.

Reference: RIC VII 188

Here is a nice example: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/..._vII_188.jpg

The attribution is correct but it has SMNS in exe. rather than SMNA. Which is a different officina.

Thanks for the information and comment. How does one reconcile the difference with SMNS or is that even important? Not that I would do it, but when I first started looking into this I so wanted to give it a good scrubbing so that I could read the lettering!
This is so much of an eye opener, I used to think my few coins from the 1700's and 1800's were old.

The last letter here identifies the Officina, which you can consider as a workshop within the Mint of Nicomedia. The SMN identifies the Mint as Nicomedia and the last letter identifies the workshop, of which there were six at Nicomedia at this point marking A, B, &Gamma, &Delta, E and S. The two coins were simply produced by different officina at the same mint during the same issue.

RIC dates this coin to being produced between A.D. 330 and A.D. 335.

I hope that makes some sense.

Martin

Thanks for the clarification answered my question perfectly. Now all I have to figure out is how to collect coins without going broke!
