Hi everyone

I thought it would be interesting to run a series of threads on grading criteria and what you may use to help determine the grades of circulated Lincoln cents , the object is to describe as close as possible how you would determine a grade of G-4 , pictures are welcome as illustrations along with how you arrived at the grade of G-4 .

this will be a continuing series of posts with threads for all grade points from G-4 to AU-58 ,, Please keep each thread pure to the topic !

let the fun begin ! and please don't be shy ! the more objective opinions that we get per thread the better the overall picture of each grade point will be .

Wheats Cents; From PCGS: Obv. Head worn smooth, slight folds in coat visible, rim may be worn into lettering. Rev. Only outline of wheat stalks present though some detail in lower wheats may be visible.

From Photograde: Obv. Letters may be blended w/rim and date will be full. Rev. Wheats will be worn smooth but distinctly outlined.

Awesome idea!

bherring1964 - That's cheating! He asked what we think.

G4 -

Obverse: Date and mint mark easily legible. Rim worn down and rounded but it must be present. No definition between the cheek and jaw, completely merged. The eyes, nose and mouth should be present. Head worn flat from jaw to the mid-head, the ear may show slightly. Hair at the top of the head shows some detail. The coat is starting to flatten from the neck to the rim, but some details present.

Reverse: Wheat heads may show a trace of a few lines, but often worn smooth. Wheat grains worn smooth, but the outlines can sometimes be seen (not required). Rim flattened and rounded, usually about the same height as the devices, but it must be present.

No obvious problems that would cause it to net grade to AG.

Wheat stalks on reverse will be worn smooth with no trace of the parallel lines in the upper part of the stalks. Date, mint mark and letters in the legends and mottoes must be readable.

Baseline G-4

obverse bust worn flat some of ear detail may show ,Jaw,neck ,collar and jacket nearly blended , some of the deeper details in hair still present, bow tie barely decernable ,rim starting to merge with lettering and maybe extremely weak in a few places date maybe weak but is easily read .

reverse details wheatheads worn flat , only the deepest details of the stalks maybe visable , lettering worn but readable , rim merging with lettering and may have a few spots of extreme weakness .

coin may have numerous dings scratches and scrapes finger prints and other remnants of extended use ,color brown or dark brown or a mixture of both .

Thanks Thad and Metalman for the pics. I agree with the G4 grade on both your coins.

I'll refrain from quoting PCGS & Photograde in the future but will continue to reference my "mini-library" when we hit VF25 to EF45 coins!

Cool thread.

Excellent idea for this thread. Getting experienced input and opinions from other collectors with large color photos is a real help for noobs like me.

Looking forward to the other grades.

I figured I would give this a try. I just got one of the bags of wheat cents from ebay so I have access to a wide variety of low to mid range coins. Unfortunately once it gets to the high grades I'll have a lot fewer options.
Anyways, for G-4 on the obverse the date should be readable, the face will be worn flat but some detail should be present (eyes and lips). On the reverse the wheat stocks will be worn flat but visible. Additionally, there should be no excessive damage. The coin pictured is my example of a G-4 coin.

decoinboy that is one torn up '11! I couldn't go higher than AG3 on that one.

Your post on the G6 thread was a really nice G6 though!

Agreed, that's a good example of an AG coin.
