Probably just the common master die doubling found on the year.

The 002 is a lot stronger than that:
1972-LMC-1-D0-002-Possibly
1972-LMC-1-D0-002-Possibly
Note the curve on the top of the '9' at 11:00?
All the large DDOs have the '9' affected strongly:

I recently found what I think may be a 1972 Lincoln Penny double die error, but the error looks to be only in the "72" of the date. Is this common?

On master die doubling you see that area affected a lot:
1972-LMC-1-D0-002-Possibly
50% of the 1972 cents from all three mints look like this. It is common.
