commems CCF Master Historian of USA Commemoratives United States 12254 Posts	Posted 07/15/2020 10:39 am The topic of the Royal Canadian Mint ( RCM) applying a coating to its collector coins has come up multiple times here, I first noticed the coating on coins I had purchased from the RCM well over a decade ago. I was reading the recent National Post article on how the RCM switched over from striking collector coins to the production of medical equipment to support Canada's COVID-19 needs and came across this comment from Fabrice Wong Chi Man, who was identified as a lead engineer at the Mint: "We have a coating process for collector coins at the Mint that is done in explosion-proof rooms. Those are best suited because they can handle all the chemical products. So we put it all in the mixing tanks there and we get hand sanitizer." (Note: the hand sanitizer mix is different from the coin coating mix.) Makes me wonder what chemicals the RCM uses to coat its coins in light of the fact that it considers an "explosion-proof" room as being needed for the operation? Must be a very special blend! canadian_coins Pillar of the Community United States 2408 Posts	Posted 07/17/2020 3:13 pm Indeed, some sort of lacquer is applied since 2007 (as far as I know based on my proof sets). Perhaps to prevent oxidation and maybe to hide surface defects. Report this Post to the Staff
