I'm a complete novice... this coin obviously has a few scratches but I know nothing about grading.

Hi Brian Welcome to the forum !

while I am far from competent with gold coins (to poor to own many ) this one looks like its an AU-55 to me , I see slight wear on the high points of both obverse and reverse .

IE; curls of hair above forehead, crown and bun on the obverse .

wing tips ,head ,neck, and leg feathers arrow tips and feet on the reverse.

there are folks here who are far better with these coins than me and mine is only an opinion , please wait for other responses !

Thanks for the reply! Is there a guide on the website as to what the different grade rankings mean?

Very little wear on this Eagle. It's got great color and the surfaces all look original.

It's probably an AU58 coin but I've seen $10 Libs slabbed at MS62 that were not as nice as this one.

I also see some slight wear on the obverse and that scratch above the bust is going to reduce the grade a little. I'm going to say AU-58.

I agree with Bherring that this coin has more appeal than many slabbed MS-62 coins.

The photos don't really show the luster but for AU gold coins the luster usually remains strong in the protected areas around the stars and letters while luster and color become dull in the open fields. This eagle has clear, bright color in the protected areas and much of the fields match that color. It might actually be a mint state coin, and if so the clean fields could earn an MS-63 grade. If there is strong cartwheel luster across the fields I would be tempted to have it graded. If it did make MS-63 at PCGS or NGC the potential sale price would take a pretty big jump.

It looks like a really nice one!

gold is soft...your coin has few distracting marks...its a beautifully struck eagle...I see MS-61 here!
