Can someone explain this glob of metal across the D mint mark for me please? Is it an error?

First thought is die chip. Second thought is PMD where the metal got pushed up and over.

My first thought is @john1's second thought. It would very unusual for a die chip to form on the smooth field of a die.

That is a broken post that should have formed the center area of the mint mark. When these post break off the die below the fields, then they appear like your coin. Raised above the mintmark.

Outside edge may have been altered by a vending machine or a counting machine that pushed that area to the left. But something to save to show to a new collector.

Ah yes of course. Despite you mentioning it in your post, I didn't recognize that this was on a mintmark. @coop nails it once again.

Looks to me like the Mintmark has suffered a hit which has "shaved" back part of the lower right quadrant and folded/pushed it back over the upper left.

I'm not seeing a die chip, just post strike damage.
