Hey guys,

I just signed up for the forum to ask if anyone had ever seen something like this if they can shed some light onto it...

2005-$2-Coin,-Unknown-Error

I'm not sure if it's a minting error or if someone intentionally defaced this coin. To me, it looks like some kind of tooling die scratched it. The scratch is perfectly round and goes all the way around the front of the coin. On the top (C A N A D A), the scratch goes between the letters but not on top of them, on the bottom the letters are actually scratched.
On the reverse of the coin there is a small amount of clipping on the core (this is not visible in this picture.)
I can produce a larger image if needed.

Thanks for your help!

Interesting, but I don't think it's a mint error, because as you say, the bottom letters have the scratches over them, so it must have happened post-strike. From what I've seen at the Mint (it's only about six blocks down the highway from me), once the coins are struck, they're bagged or rolled, and there is nothing on the rolling machine that I could see that would cause this kind of damage.
