This just arrived arrived. I was told from the seller that he inherited this from his grandfather about 40 years ago. I'd say with the $110 price tag on it that it was purchased around 1979 or 1980 considering gold prices then. There are scratches on the obverse which you will evidently see. There's full mint luster as it twirls in the light and full cartwheel effect. What do you think this will grade at? Details? and if details how bad does that affect the value?

I am not an expert, but I am guessing AU Details? I am not sure how much the details designation would affect the value, but I will look forward to seeing what other people say.

I agree with AU details. The reverse is beautiful.

The scratches on the obverse look relatively modern, and I think I know a possible culprit. Look at the bottom prong of the staple on the right in the second and third pictures. I fear that the seller's grandfather did not tamp down staples, and the coins were stored within stabbing range of the errant staples.

This coin might do better raw than in a details slab. There is definitely eye appeal to it, and IMHO the uncertainty of a details grade is worth more than a slab resolving the question.

In terms of value, maybe halfway between bullion (about $450-ish) and mid-range AU retail (about $1000-ish)? That would work out just a little bit below straight mid-AU grade Greysheet.

Still a nice one, though.

Thanks guys. AU details written on its new 2x2. This one had me at low mintage and high eye appeal Fortcollins. It's a pity about the scratches on it, but it didn't deter me from getting it. The overall eye appeal won out. I don't buy slabbed details coins so I'm unfamiliar how much the deduction would be and the more so in this case when considering the low mintage involved with this year. I didn't know if the details grade would have less of a monetary deduction because of that or if the mintage would play no role at all in the discount for a details grade. I'm definitely keeping this in the collection for the foreseeable future in a 2x2 Thanks!.......and with that...it's time to press down those staples.
