When the States quarters came out, they were hot. People went gaga over them. They were saving sets for the grand children. They were give names to die events/coin events, jut to unload what they could cash in on. People were saving rolls to make albums with. Then it all died. But HSN had a gimmic there they were selling sets of the all the different mintmarks, Gold plated examples and Platinum plated coins. They sell them by the boat loads to the Rubes. Well the true collectors knew better than buying plated stuff, as it ruins the value of the coin to a collector. But the Rubes didn't know that. They were selling out all the could for many years. Now the rubes figured out that they were taken for a ride and now dumping these into the circulation. So you see these now and then when someone figures out they are just a face value coin and spend them.

I didn't realize it was a cent. Plating companies plate cents and put them in a container to had out to customers as examples of their plating. (Thus why it looks so good)

After-market gold plating that doesn't add to the value. Oddly enough, you are the third person today to post a coin like this (the other two were a Washington quarter and a V nickel).

I am quite happy to collect plated coins provided that
the seller understands that the plating may well detract from the value, rather than add to it.

Some novice collectors may mistake them as very rare off metal strikes, and this mistake has to be clearly explained.

I am not convinced it is gold plated. Kinda looks like natural toning to me with these photos.
